Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC–Abia North) has pledged to do everything within his power to ensure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) secures victory in Abia State during the 2027 general elections.
Kalu made the declaration at Ekoli, Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, during his annual New Year visit to the Chairman of the APC in Ebonyi, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha.
The former governor of Abia State said he would deploy all resources and political influence at his disposal to wrestle power from the ruling Labour Party in Abia.
“I will support President Bola Tinubu and the APC gubernatorial candidate in the elections. I will put my heart on the field to ensure that the APC wins landslide in Abia,” Kalu stated.
He added that while he maintains a cordial relationship with the incumbent governor of Abia, Dr. Alex Otti, his focus remains on securing total victory for the APC.
“The incumbent Governor, Dr Alex Oti, is my friend but I am not discussing politics, only the total victory of the APC in the elections,” he said.
Kalu also urged state governors to take responsibility for securing their respective states rather than leaving the task solely to President Tinubu.
Drawing from his tenure as Abia governor, he recalled that his administration ensured peace and safety at a time when other states were grappling with insecurity.
“When I was Abia governor, I ensured total security of lives and properties. There were no cases of kidnapping among other crimes in Abia, and this was at a period other states were grappling with heightened insecurity,” he said.
He praised Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State for maintaining peace and security, urging other governors to emulate his example.
Loyalty and Tradition
Explaining the significance of his annual New Year visit to the Ebonyi APC chairman, Kalu described Okoro-Emegha as an embodiment of loyalty and trust.
“He is someone you can trust with your life. I raised him as a child, even when his father was alive, and he was part of the success stories I recorded as a governor,” Kalu said.
He recalled handing Okoro-Emegha over to former Ebonyi governor, Senator David Umahi, with instructions to give his principal 100 percent loyalty.
According to him, that loyalty has since been transferred to the incumbent governor, Nwifuru, further strengthening the APC’s unity in the state.
Kalu’s vow to deliver Abia to the APC underscores the party’s determination to expand its influence in the South-East ahead of the 2027 elections. His remarks also highlight the growing political rivalry between the APC and the Labour Party, which currently controls Abia State.
But how the senator hopes to flip the political loyalty of the state governed by arguably Nigeria’s most celebrated performing governor is yet to be seen.
Observers say Kalu’s influence, his combined with his longstanding political networks, and the federal muscle could present a political force that could be costly if underrated.
