Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has ruled out the possibility of remarrying after the death of her husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing her decision as pragmatic rather than moral.
Her remarks are contained in a newly launched 600-page biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr. Charles Omole and unveiled at the State House, Abuja.
“She will not remarry, she says, almost with a shrug. It is not a moral pronouncement so much as a pragmatic one: she has grandchildren; one husband was enough,” Omole wrote.
The book chronicles Buhari’s journey from his early years in Daura, Katsina State, to his final hours in a London hospital in July 2025.
Omole explained that Aisha Buhari’s decision represents “a refusal of cultural binaries” that often judge widows as betrayers for remarrying or saints for abstaining. Instead, she has chosen to define her future on her own terms.
A Graceful Retreat into Family and Philanthropy
According to the biography, Aisha Buhari intends to embrace a quieter, more private life, focusing on family, philanthropy, and personal growth.
She plans to holiday with friends, spend time with her grandchildren, and continue her humanitarian work through the Aisha Buhari Foundation and the Cardiovascular and Medical Centre in Kano, which has reportedly completed over 200 medical procedures.
Omole described her outlook as “a personal reset after years in the political spotlight,” noting that her refusal to remarry signals a graceful retreat from national politics.
“If the republic expects a politics of eternal return, she offers a politics of departure instead: let others take the stage; let the house heal,” he observed.
The book also reflects on her marriage to Buhari, portraying it as both empowering and challenging.
“For Aisha Buhari, her marriage served as both a refuge and a trial. It gave her a platform to voice her opinions, only to punish her for doing so. It opened doors to decision-making spaces, but those spaces became unwelcoming,” Omole wrote.
Married in 1989, Aisha Buhari shared 35 years with Muhammadu Buhari, raising five children together.
With his passing in July 2025, she appears ready to close one chapter and begin another—defined by family, philanthropy, and quiet reflection.
As Omole summarised: “Her refusal to remarry is not defiance—it is contentment.”
