Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football, closing the chapter on a remarkable 15-year career with Nigeria’s national team.
In a heartfelt statement shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, Musa said the decision came “after a lot of thought.”
He reflected on his journey from a teenage call-up to the U-20, U-23, and senior team, recalling how wearing the green and white jersey always felt like home. “Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about,” he wrote.
Musa leaves behind a legacy as Nigeria’s most-capped player with 111 appearances, a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner, and the country’s highest World Cup goalscorer, with unforgettable braces against Argentina in 2014 and Iceland in 2018.
Legacy of Leadership and Gratitude
Reflecting on his career, Musa said every match carried responsibility and pride. “Playing 111 matches for my country is something I hold with deep respect. To become the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football is a great honour,” he noted.
He highlighted moments that defined his career: lifting the AFCON trophy in 2013, scoring four World Cup goals, and captaining the Super Eagles.
“Wearing the armband taught me a lot, about responsibility, patience, and putting others first,” Musa explained, adding that his commitment to Nigeria never wavered even during difficult times.
Musa expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, backroom staff, and administrators, while sending love to fans worldwide.
“Your support meant more to me than you know. I know I gave my best. I know the Super Eagles will continue to move forward. And I know that this bond will never be broken,” he concluded.
