Labour Party BoT Dissolves Interim Committee as Internal Crisis Lingers

A circle of leadership crisis has erupted within the Labour Party (LP), postponing further any resolution of the struggle for control of its structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and a quorum of the statutory National Executive Council (NEC) announced the dissolution of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led interim National Working Committee (iNWC).

The decision was communicated in a leaked statement dated December 2, 2025, jointly signed by BoT Chairman S.O. Ejiofor and Secretary Salisu Mohammed.

Ejiofor said the move followed months of “gross incompetence,” failure to organise congresses, and alleged acts capable of plunging the party into “irreparable oblivion.”

As part of the shake-up, Prince Tony Akeni was reappointed acting National Publicity Secretary, while Nwauwa Nnawuihie was named acting National Secretary pending the constitution of a fresh iNWC.

The crisis traces back to September 2024, when the Usman committee was appointed in Umuahia with a 90-day mandate to conduct nationwide congresses and a national convention.

The committee failed to deliver, even after an extension expired in October 2025.

During its tenure, the LP was excluded by INEC from local government elections, by-elections, and upcoming polls, leading to defections and organisational paralysis.

However, Usman’s media aide, Ken Asogwa, rejected the dissolution, arguing that only the NEC or National Convention can dissolve a working committee. He questioned the legitimacy of the letters announcing the decision, describing them as contradictory.

National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh also dismissed the BoT’s authority, insisting the party has no factions. “The Labour Party is intact. We have only one leader. These guys are just distractions,” he said.

The development sets the stage for renewed legal and political battles within the party, particularly in camps linked to former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
