Explosion Rocks NNPC’s Escravos Pipeline in the Niger Delta

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has confirmed a fiery explosion on the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline in Delta State.

The incident struck at about 5:50 p.m. on December 10, 2025, near the Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpopo communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom.

Andy Odeh, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, said initial checks showed a sudden pressure drop consistent with a rupture on the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) pipeline.

“The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but will be confirmed after a detailed investigation has been concluded.”

Odeh emphasized that the company’s immediate focus was protecting lives and the environment.

“Our priority at this time is the safety of nearby communities and the protection of the environment.”

He added that emergency response teams had been deployed. “Emergency response procedures have been activated, and we are working closely with relevant authorities and community leaders to ensure a coordinated approach to mitigate impact.”

NNPC assured citizens that it remains committed to strict safety and environmental standards. The company promised to share updates as soon as verified information becomes available.

This blast, although fewer these days and far in-between, adds to a troubling string of incidents in the Niger Delta, a region long scarred by oil spills, gas leaks, and environmental degradation.

Communities continue to bear the brunt of industrial accidents, raising questions about infrastructure safety and oversight.

It’s not clear if the latest explosion is sabotage, or simply aging pipelines left unchecked.
