Senators Raise Alarm Over Withdrawal of Police Protection

The Nigerian Senate has expressed serious concern over the withdrawal of police orderlies attached to lawmakers, warning that the move could expose members to unnecessary danger.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin disclosed that the leadership of the Senate held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to address the matter, with hopes of securing an exemption for senators from the presidential directive.

On November 23, 2025, President Bola Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of police officers attached to “Very Important Persons” (VIPs) across the country, directing that the officers be redeployed to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security.

About 11,000 police officers are currently engaged in VIP escort duties nationwide.

Senators React

The push for exemption followed a Point of Order raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), who lamented the withdrawal of his lone police orderly.

Ningi said while he had no objection to the directive itself, he was disappointed at its uneven enforcement. He argued that compliance should begin with the Presidency, Vice Presidency, and Federal Ministers.

He noted that despite his own orderly being withdrawn, he continued to see businessmen, foreign nationals, and celebrity entertainers escorted by contingents of police officers in apparent disregard of the President’s order

In response, the Senate mandated its Committee on Police Affairs to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged selective enforcement of the directive.

The committee has been given four weeks to complete the assignment and report back to plenary.
