The faction of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to conduct state congresses and later a national convention to elect party officials.
Factional Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, disclosed this on Sunday during the opening session of the BoT meeting held at Wike’s residence in Life Camp, Abuja.
He explained that efforts were already underway to reorganise PDP structures in states affected by internal crises through the constitution of caretaker committees.
“We are making meaningful progress in reorganising affected states, including the constitution of credible caretaker committees, to prepare the ground for transparent congresses and subsequent convention process,” Ohuabunwa said.
Ohuabunwa pledged the BoT’s support for the factional National Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.
“We are going to work with this NWC; we are going to encourage them, we are going to support them to ensure that the right things are done, and that things will be done in line with the law and the guidance of our great party, the PDP,” he stated.
He stressed that the BoT has a constitutional duty to serve as a stabilising force.
“Our responsibility is to safeguard the party’s soul, steer it away from divisive tendencies, and reinforce the values that have historically set the PDP apart as a disciplined and democratically established institution,” he added.
Deepening Party Crisis
The planned convention does nothing to de-escalate the PDP crisis. It will be recalled that just in November, the other bloc aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde held a national convention in Ibadan, producing Turaki Taminu as National Chairman.
However, that convention was marred by conflicting court orders, some permitting and others halting the process.
The Wike faction is now in court seeking to nullify the Ibadan convention.
Ohuabunwa urged members to remain steadfast. “Our duty is clear, well stated, to consolidate the reforms already underway, deepen internal cohesion, and ensure that the PDP emerges stronger, more united, and fully prepared for the leadership responsibilities ahead,” he said.
The PDP now faces two rival conventions, two rival leaderships, and multiple court battles.
From all intents and purposes, the Nigerian main opposition party in tartars, with only one beneficiary – President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC).
