Senior Counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International, Sean Nelson, has urged influential members of the United States House Appropriations Committee to act swiftly in response to what he described as one of the “worst persecution situations in the world.”
Nelson delivered the message during a roundtable discussion with Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, Robert Aderholt, Riley Moore, Scott Franklin, and Mark Alford — lawmakers who hold significant sway over US foreign aid and diplomatic resource allocation through their budgetary oversight role.
Sean Nelson added that Nigeria is the “deadliest country in the world for Christians” claiming more Christian are killed there than in all other countries combined and at a rate “five times” higher than Muslims when adjusted for population.
He said extremists also target Muslims who refuse to embrace their extreme ideology, which he argued further undercuts Abuja’s narrative that the crisis is driven mainly criminality or local disputes.
Nelson outlined the escalating violence and terror faced by Christians in Nigeria, stressing that the crisis is not only a humanitarian disaster but also a strategic pivot point for the region.
“This is a real opportunity to stop one of the worst persecution situations in the world. And if resolved, it will be an immense social, economic, and security benefit for Nigeria, Africa, and its Global Partners, including the U.S.,” he told the lawmakers.
A former atheist turned Catholic, Nelson emphasised the need for urgent intervention.
“Too many times, we’ve said it’s too late. We waited until late. Here, we do not have to wait until it is too late, we can act with a real chance of success, now,” he said.
Nelson argued that addressing the crisis would not only save lives but also strengthen regional stability and global partnerships.
He asked the Appropriations Committee to consider Nigeria’s situation as both a moral imperative and a strategic necessity, warning that failure to act could deepen instability across West Africa.
