The People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has produced a new governorship candidate, Adebayo Adedamola, popularly known as Fryo, following the successful conduct of its primary election in Osogbo on Tuesday.
The primary, held at Adolak Hall, came just a day after Governor Ademola Adeleke publicly resigned from the party, leaving Fryo as the sole contender.
Out of 990 delegates, 957 were accredited, with 20 void votes recorded. Fryo secured 919 votes, making him the party’s flagbearer for the 2026 governorship election.
Announcing the result, the chairman of the PDP electoral committee, Humphrey Abba, confirmed that the exercise was conducted in line with party guidelines.
“Following the successful voting, I am pleased to announce that 20 void votes were recorded. One of the aspirants withdrew, and the candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned,” Abba declared.
Post-Primary Drama
Barely minutes after the committee departed the venue, tension flared as the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, stormed the hall with some lawmakers. They attempted to disrupt the exercise, which had already been concluded.
Egbedun reportedly clashed with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who were present to monitor proceedings.
The altercation underscored lingering divisions within the state chapter of the PDP, already shaken by Adeleke’s sudden exit.
With Fryo now officially declared candidate, attention shifts to how the PDP will consolidate its ranks ahead of the 2026 polls.
Adeleke’s departure leaves a vacuum in the party, while the disruption by lawmakers signals possible internal resistance to Fryo’s candidacy.
The coming weeks will be crucial for the PDP in Osun, as it seeks to project unity and rally support behind its new flagbearer.
