The YALI Regional Leadership Center (RLC) Nigeria Alumni, South-West Region, joined the global community on Monday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, hosting an impactful advocacy session at
Nobel Pride Schools, Surulere, Lagos.
The outreach provided a platform to engage students on the dangers of violence in society, with a particular focus on the vulnerabilities faced by women and girls.
The Deputy Regional Coordinator and event spokesperson, Mrs. Adebusola Omotunde, led the discourse, addressing issues such as domestic abuse, rape, bullying, child marriage, molestation, and other forms of violence prevalent in communities.
Mrs. Omotunde emphasized that any society that fails to value and protect its people risks losing its cultural and moral foundation. She urged the students to reject all forms of violence, speak up when confronted with abusive behaviours, and seek help from trusted adults and authorities.
According to her, “Silence allows violence to thrive.” Every young person must learn to speak out, stand firm, and protect one another.
The interactive session saw enthusiastic participation from the students, who asked thoughtful questions and made personal commitments to becoming ambassadors of non-violence in their homes and communities. Several students also received token cash gifts as encouragement for their engagement and contributions.
The Regional Coordinator, Mr. Afonrinwo Babs ‘Deji, commended the students and the school leadership for embracing the initiative. He reminded the young learners that responsible citizenship begins with everyday choices that promote safety, respect, and empathy.
This event also marks the beginning of the Chapter’s activities for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the annual global campaign running from 25 November to 10 December. The 16-day international movement, observed in more than 180 countries, calls for intensified efforts to end all forms of violence against women and girls, strengthen community response, and promote policies that protect survivors and prevent abuse.
YALI RLC Nigeria Alumni South-West Region will continue its awareness activities throughout the 16 Days campaign, working with schools, local communities, and partners to promote a safer and more equitable society.
