President Bola Tinubu on Sunday evening held an emergency security meeting with top military and security chiefs at the State House, Abuja, to review Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

The President disclosed the meeting on his verified X handle, @OfficialABAT, declaring that decisive steps are being taken to stabilize affected areas.

He assured Nigerians that those threatening the country’s territorial integrity will face the full weight of the law.

“I am currently in an extended security meeting with heads of our defense and intelligence apparatus including the Chief of Defense Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the DSS, at the State House. We are reviewing the latest reports and taking decisive actions to stabilize the affected areas and protect our citizens.

“I am receiving continuous briefings and have directed our security services to move with speed, precision, and absolute resolve. As President, I am fully committed to the security of all Nigerians. Those who threaten the peace and security of our nation will face the full weight of the law. Nigeria will prevail,” Tinubu wrote.

Boosting Police Presence Nationwide

At the meeting, Tinubu ordered the withdrawal of police officers currently assigned to provide security for Very Important Persons (VIPs).

According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, police authorities will now deploy those officers to concentrate on core policing duties.

VIPs who require protection will instead request well‑armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).

The directive comes amid concerns that many parts of Nigeria, especially remote communities, have few policemen at local stations, leaving residents vulnerable to banditry and terrorism. Tinubu said boosting police presence in communities is a priority.

Already, the President has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers. The federal government is collaborating with states to upgrade police training facilities nationwide, aiming to strengthen capacity and improve response times.

Tinubu’s directive is designed to reallocate resources toward community safety, a move that could reshape Nigeria’s policing model if fully implemented.

Sunday’s meeting was attended by Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Director‑General of the Department of State Services Tosin Adeola Ajayi.

Other sighted were some of his inner aides including Mr Sunday Dare, and Bayo Onanuga. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi was also at the meeting.
