Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, killing at least four soldiers and destroying military equipment.
The attack occurred less than 24 hours after the North East Governors Forum met in Damaturu to discuss strategies to tackle insurgency in the region.
According to eyewitnesses, the terrorists stormed the military base around 2 am, sacking the troops and burning down equipment deployed there. “They ransacked the armory, looted what they could and burnt it down; they set ablaze the artillery, five MRAPs, anti-aircraft carriers, and over 20 Hilux vans,” an online news media reported a security source said.
However, the Nigerian Army confirmed the attack, stating “Troops of Operation HADIN KAI are currently in a fierce battle against ISWAP attack at Buni Gari, Yobe State. Details later.”
Another soldier who reportedly escaped the attack revealed that the terrorists overpowered them, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers, who were “gruesomely killed” and beheaded.
Resurgence of Boko Haram Attacks
This attack is part of a recent surge in Boko Haram’s activities in the region. At least six military formations have been targeted by the terrorists in Goneri, Wajirko, Sabon Gari, Izge, and Wulgo, where soldiers were killed and military equipment looted or destroyed.
According to reports, attacks between January and April 2025 claimed the lives of an army commander, a captain, and 22 soldiers.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has called for the deployment of more troops and equipment to combat the insurgency. “There should be forces that will keep the ground, otherwise they will come back,” he said, emphasizing the need for sustained military operations to prevent the reoccupation of previously reclaimed territories.
Zulum also highlighted the success of non-kinetic measures, revealing that over 300,000 repentant insurgents and their families had surrendered over the past three years.
The attack has led to a humanitarian crisis, with many residents fleeing their homes to areas they consider safe.
“The military had shut down vehicular movement on the busy road, which serves as a link between Yobe and Biu and other towns in southern Borno,” a local source said.
