Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, may be having a rethink about dumping the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after its successful national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, Saturday November 15, and takeover of the national secretariate, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
The secretariate was hitherto occupied by a renegade faction of the party led by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, said to be loyal to the ruling party.
The governor on Wednesday, announced the suspension of the much‑anticipated defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), but he hinged his decision on the security situation in Kebbi State, saying he considered it morally wrong to celebrate politics while families in Kebbi are grieving the abduction of schoolgirls.
Kefas had announced last week that he would be formally received into the APC today.
He now says the tragic incident compelled him to put national solidarity above partisan interests.
“In the light of the deeply troubling incident of the kidnapping of innocent schoolgirls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled declaration and movement to the APC,” he explained.
Compassion Above Politics
The governor stressed that Nigeria is once again confronted with the painful reality of insecurity, and that compassion must rise above politics.
“The safety of our children, the most vulnerable and precious members of our society, is far more important than any political activities or ceremony,” he said.
Kefas added that his heart is with the families of the abducted children, the government and people of Kebbi State, and President Bola Tinubu, who is grappling with the crisis.
He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the girls, expressing confidence in their capacity to deliver.
The governor described the moment as one for reflection, prayers, unity, and collective action. He called on Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant, prayerful, and united. “This is not a time for celebration. It is a time for reflection, prayers, unity, and collective actions,” he said.
Kefas assured that a new date for his defection would be communicated after consultations and when it is deemed appropriate.
The indefinite suspension of Kefas’s defection underscores how national security crises can reshape political timelines. The move may strengthen his image as a compassionate leader, while also delaying APC’s momentum in Taraba, and giving PDP the chance to halt the bleeding of the party.
New party boss, Kabiru Turaki (SAN has vowed he would commence a mission to reunite and consolidate the party ahead of crucial national elections in early 2027.
