A series of transport disruptions on Thursday left travellers in Abuja stranded, as both aviation and rail operations faced unexpected mishaps.
At Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, a private jet reportedly suffered an incident while landing, forcing authorities to close the runway temporarily.
The Gulfstream 400 aircraft, tail number 5N-PZE, was arriving from Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, with 14 passengers and four crew members on board.
The mishap occurred around 2:16 pm, prompting emergency protocols and the immediate suspension of runway operations.
Aviation sources say the cause of the incident is yet to be determined. “The cause of the incident could not be ascertained at the moment, but I am sure the appropriate authorities have been informed,” another news media, the Daily Trust, reports its sources said.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, confirmed awareness of the event.
Meanwhile, passengers on the Abuja–Kaduna train service were left stranded after their journey from Rigasa station was cut short due to a mechanical fault. The train, which departed shortly after 2 pm, halted midway before reversing back to Kaduna for repairs.
“We didn’t understand what happened. The train suddenly started reversing back to Kaduna after stopping for a while,” one passenger told Leadership on condition of anonymity.
A Nigerian Railway Corporation staffer confirmed the technical issues, noting that repairs were ongoing. Dozens of passengers remained stranded at Kaduna station, while some abandoned the wait.
This latest incident comes just days after a Warri–Itakpe train derailment in Kogi State, where police had to rescue passengers stranded in Adogo community, Ajaokuta Local Government Area.
CSP William Ovye-Aya, Kogi Police PRO, said all passengers were safely evacuated, with no casualties reported.
While detailed reports are still awaited, the twin transport disruptions today highlight challenges in Nigeria’s aviation and rail sectors, and the need for the country to continue focusing and improving on regulatory oversight to avert worse mishaps in future.
