In an unprecedented online post, United States President Donald Trump has announced a plan to distribute at least $2,000 to every American, funded by what he described as “trillions of dollars” generated from U.S. tariffs.
The announcement, made Sunday on his social media platform Truth Social, signals Trump’s latest populist push as he touts America’s economic strength under his leadership.
According to him, the payments would exclude “high-income people,” though no income threshold or rollout date was mentioned.
Trump wrote, “People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the richest, most respected country in the world, with almost no inflation and a record stock market price.”
He added that America’s booming trade revenues would soon help pay down its “enormous debt” of $37 trillion.
The president’s post claimed the U.S. was witnessing “record investment” and “plants and factories going up all over the place.”
He described the proposed $2,000 “tariff dividend” as a reward for citizens, financed by what he views as a patriotic economic policy that forces foreign competitors to “pay fair.”
Tariffs, Courts, and a Political Storm
Shortly after the announcement, Trump fired off a series of posts targeting the U.S. Supreme Court, accusing it of limiting his power to impose tariffs for national security reasons.
“So, let’s get this straight?” he wrote. “The President of the United States is allowed to stop all trade with a foreign country but cannot put a simple tariff on it for national security? That is not what our great Founders had in mind!”
He insisted tariffs were the foundation of America’s renewed manufacturing boom, claiming that “businesses are pouring into the USA only because of tariffs.”
The fiery remarks come as economists remain divided on the long-term effects of Trump’s trade policies.
Some analysts credit his tariffs with protecting domestic industries, while others argue they raise consumer costs and risk retaliation from major partners like China.
If implemented, the proposed “tariff dividend” would mark one of the largest direct cash disbursements in American history.
Yet, he hasn’t spelt out how it will be funded sustainably, and it’s still too early to say if Congress will approve such a politically charged payout.
Trump’s message, however, struck a familiar populist tone — blending economic bravado with defiance toward institutions he often portrays as obstructive.
“Has the United States Supreme Court not been told this? What the hell is going on?” he ended, signing off, “President DJT.”
