The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently open diplomatic talks with United States President Donald Trump over his recent threat of possible military action against Nigeria.
Speaking during the November Holy Ghost Service at the Redemption City, Adeboye said the Nigerian leader must “move fast, move diplomatically, and move wisely” to prevent escalation.
He wants Tinubu to convince Trump to delay any planned action for at least 100 days — enough time for Nigeria to prove real progress in tackling terrorism and religious killings.
Trump had earlier directed the US Department of Defence to prepare for “possible action” in Nigeria, accusing the government of failing to protect Christians from violence. He described Nigeria as a “disgraced country.”
The federal government has rejected the allegations, insisting there is no systematic persecution of Christians and describing the allegations as politically motivated.
But increasing number of Christian clerics are pointing to mounting evidence of Christian massacres in several parts of northern Nigeria in the last several years.
Diplomacy, Not Confrontation
Adeboye warned that the situation required wisdom, not chest-thumping. “If I were asked to make suggestions,” he said, “I would tell our government to persuade the president of America to delay his action for about 100 days. Then return home and tell our security chiefs: get rid of these terrorists within 90 days or resign.”
The revered cleric urged Tinubu to expose the financiers of insurgency and banditry regardless of their political weight.
According to him, the credibility of Nigeria before the international community depends on “decisive and honest action.”
He further noted that Nigeria could not depend on foreign nations if conflict broke out. “If America attacks us,” Adeboye warned, “China, Russia, and others will condemn it, but that’s all. Britain won’t come to help us. No foreign power will.”
His comments came just days after China publicly cautioned against foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, following Trump’s remarks.
Adeboye ended his message with a plea for national unity. “This is not the time for jokes, grammar, or arguments. It’s not about Christians or Muslims — innocent people are dying,” he said.
The preacher, who in 2014 delved somewhat into national politics by being critical of the then government of President Goodluck Jonathan, has rarely spoken out more open in recent years over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
However, his latest remarks come timely amid renewed tension over in religious freedom, economic hardship, and political instability.
