A High Court in Oyo State has directed the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to go ahead with the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan.
Justice A. L. Akintola issued the ruling on Monday after considering an ex parte application filed by Folahan Malomo Adelabi.
The decision effectively overturned a restraining order granted last week by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The convention is expected to elect new national officers for the opposition party. It had been halted by the Federal High Court on October 31, 2025, following a legal challenge.
Legal Challenge Against the Convention
Three PDP members—Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP chairman), and Turnah George (South-South PDP Secretary)—had filed a suit claiming breaches of the party’s constitution in the convention’s planning.
The plaintiffs argued that the proposed convention violated the PDP constitution, the 1999 Constitution, and the Electoral Act.
They urged the court to restrain the party leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from proceeding.
Justice Akintola’s ruling now allows the party to continue preparations and hold the convention as planned.
