House Plenary Descends into Chaos Over Security and Land Motions

The House of Representatives plenary on Tuesday erupted in chaos after members rejected several motions related to national security and protection of government assets.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu presided over the rowdy session, which saw heated disagreements among lawmakers. The situation forced him to suspend proceedings and call for a closed-door meeting to restore order.

Trouble started when Ademorin Kuye, representing Somolu Federal Constituency, Lagos State, raised a motion on the alleged illegal allocation of lands within the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex.

Kuye, APC member and Chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, urged that his committee investigate the matter.

Tension flare up on Tuesday in the House of Representatives

Francis Waive (Delta State), Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, proposed an amendment, arguing that the Committee on Commerce should handle the probe, since it involved commercial property. Mark Esset (Akwa Ibom) supported Waive’s position.

Yusuf Gagdi (Plateau State) insisted the Public Assets Committee was the proper body to investigate. With no consensus, Gbefwi Gaza (Nasarawa) suggested an Ad-hoc Committee combining members of both Committees.

When Kalu put the proposal to a voice vote, the chamber appeared evenly split. Unable to determine the majority, he ruled against it, sparking protests.

Tensions grew during Mohammed Bio’s motion urging military bases in his crisis-hit Kwara constituencies. The majority voted against it, provoking more dissent.

The chaos escalated further when Ayodeji Alao-Akala moved a motion on Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Despite opposition, Kalu ruled in favor, triggering louder protests.

Amid the heightened emotions, Kalu suspended the plenary for another closed-door session to calm members and restore order.
