UNILAG Bans Skitmakers, Filmmakers from Shooting Videos on Campus

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has banned the unauthorised use of its campus, hostels, and facilities for video productions by skitmakers, filmmakers, and other content creators.

In a statement signed by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the Head of Communication, the university said the decision followed an alarming rise in unapproved filming activities across its premises.

It observed that many of these productions distort the school’s image and disrupt academic activities.

“The attention of the University Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films and skits without authorisation,” the statement read.

Protecting UNILAG’s Image and Academic Space

UNILAG explained that the restriction was meant to safeguard the university’s academic environment from distortion and misrepresentation in unregulated content.

It added that such productions, often circulated online, could portray the institution negatively or invade students’ privacy.

The statement clarified that the school already has procedures for video or photography requests, requiring formal clearance from the university’s communication unit before any recording or content production can take place.

“Members of the University community and general public are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility,” the statement added.

The directive comes amid rising popularity of social media skits filmed in Nigerian universities. Many content creators have used campuses for comic videos, sometimes without permission.

Do you think this new policy is curbing misuse and refocusing students to their studies, or is it stifling student creativity in the digital age?
