Wike Blames PDP Crisis on Governors’ Impunity, Dismisses APC Involvement

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed suggestions that he remains bitter over the outcome of the 2022 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary or that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is behind the party’s internal crisis.

Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Friday, Wike said his concern was not personal but rooted in his desire for internal democracy within the PDP.

“I don’t know about dividing the party,” he said. “When you do the right thing, you get the right result. What I want in the PDP is that the right thing should be done.”

‘PDP Is Destroying Itself’

Wike accused PDP governors of weakening the opposition through arrogance, exclusion, and disregard for due process.

“All this talk about APC is rubbish,” he said. “Is it APC that is making you take the wrong decision? Is it APC that is making you sideline people?”

He lamented that the party’s leaders had become consumed by internal power struggles instead of focusing on challenging the ruling APC.

“As an opposition party, you’re supposed to unite to take over power,” he said. “But what we see now is impunity and self-destruction. The way these present governors are doing things, they will bury the party.”

The minister said PDP’s troubles deepened because founding members were being pushed aside. He cited examples where consensus candidates were imposed without consultation.

“How can you adopt someone as a consensus candidate without consulting your own national organising secretary simply because he’s not a governor?” he asked.

‘Leadership Has Collapsed’

Wike reflected on his time as governor, saying the party’s unity then was a result of responsible leadership.

“When we were governors, why did no one leave the PDP? Because we showed leadership and took responsibility. Today, there’s no commitment, only arrogance,” he said.

He also recalled warning party leaders about their approach to internal disputes.

“When the issue of secretary started, I told them, follow the process. They refused. The man went to the Supreme Court. I said this will kill the party, and that’s exactly what’s happening,” he said.

Wike concluded that PDP’s decline was not due to external manipulation but a direct consequence of its own leaders’ arrogance and impunity. “You cannot build a party on impunity and expect it to stand,” he warned.
