Ondo Government Dismiss Panic Over Alleged ISWAP Threat

The Ondo State Government has called for calm following the circulation of a leaked Department of State Services (DSS) memo warning of a possible attack by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on some communities in the state.

The leaked memo, reportedly addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Akure, raised fears of a potential terror threat.

But the state government has downplayed the concerns, insisting that there is no immediate danger and that proactive measures are already in place to secure residents.

In a statement issued Wednesday in Akure, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, said the leaked memo formed part of “regular intelligence reports shared among security agencies to enhance vigilance.”

Security Measures Already in Motion

According to Ajanaku, intelligence briefings like the one leaked are routine operations used by security agencies to coordinate preventive action and forestall attacks.

“Such reports are a normal part of security operations aimed at identifying and preventing potential threats,” he said. “These assessments are used in joint operations to enhance vigilance and take proactive measures.”

He added that the administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa was working closely with the DSS, the Nigerian Army, and other security agencies to ensure that no attack occurs, especially in border communities.

“The government is taking several steps to protect residents and maintain Ondo’s reputation as one of the safest states in Nigeria,” Ajanaku assured.

Residents Urged to Stay Calm and Watchful

While confirming that the alert was under review, the commissioner appealed to residents to go about their normal activities without fear but to remain observant.

“We urge residents to remain calm and report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest security agency,” he advised.

Ajanaku also cautioned citizens against spreading misinformation or taking the law into their own hands. He reiterated that “the situation is under control” and that “all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure public safety.”

Officials Tighten Surveillance After Leak

The DSS memo reportedly warned of a plan by ISWAP fighters to infiltrate and launch coordinated attacks on select Ondo communities.

Though the leak caused brief public anxiety, security agencies have since strengthened patrols and intelligence sharing in border areas.

Officials maintain that the leak does not indicate a security lapse but rather shows the ongoing collaboration among intelligence and defence agencies to detect and neutralise threats early.

As the government reassures citizens of their safety, the question remains — how many such threats are quietly intercepted before they ever reach the public eye?
