ASUU Suspends Warning Strike After Fresh Talks with FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, which began on October 13, 2025.

The union said it reached this decision after the Federal Government renewed commitments to resolve key outstanding issues.

The warning strike, which was due to end on October 27, was launched following a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government.

ASUU had accused authorities of persistent neglect and insincerity in implementing the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement — a document that remains at the heart of most university labour disputes in Nigeria.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday morning, ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, said the suspension followed an emergency National Executive Council meeting that ended in the early hours of the day.

He explained that the decision was influenced by the intervention of the Senate and new assurances from government representatives.

“NEC resolved that the warning strike is hereby suspended with immediate effect. Should the government fail to address the issues within one month, ASUU reserves the right to return to its initial decision,” Piwuna said.

ASUU’s major demands include payment of withheld salaries, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances, and the release of revitalisation funds for public universities.

The union also seeks the immediate payment of third-party deductions owed to staff since the last prolonged strike in 2022.

While many lecturers welcomed the suspension as a sign of progress, some are still sceptical about the government’s promises. Past negotiations have often stalled after temporary truces.
