The federal government has intensified its campaign against climate change with a public roadshow in Abuja, designed to awaken citizens to the urgent threat facing the environment.
Organised by the Federal Ministry of Environment in partnership with the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), the event served as a prelude to the forthcoming International Conference on Climate Change and Just Energy Transition 2025.
Representing the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the ministry’s Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Mrs. Aneke Agnes Nkechi, said the campaign seeks to inspire individual and collective responsibility.
“As we all know, climate change is real. It’s a reality that must be looked at. We are here to create awareness so that people understand it’s not just a Nigerian problem — it’s a global challenge,” she said.
She added that the ministry is working with national and international partners to ensure that Nigeria contributes meaningfully to global climate action and sustainable land use. “The earlier we face this reality, the better for everybody,” she warned.
Partners Call for Regional Action
Executive Director of WASCAL, Professor Emmanuel Wendsongré Ramde, said the event reflects a growing alliance between Nigeria and its West African partners in the fight against climate threats.
He revealed that the initiative is supported by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space of Germany, as part of a broader cooperation framework between Europe and West Africa.
According to him, the 2025 conference will “share knowledge, showcase innovations, and catalyse collaborations” across academia, government, and industry.
He noted that WASCAL provides climate intelligence, data management, and training to strengthen resilience in the sub-region.
“We live with extreme weather events, rising temperatures, drought, and flooding. These disturb our daily lives and our agricultural systems. That’s why we’re creating awareness before the conference,” he said.
Nigeria to Host First WASCAL International Conference
Director of the Department of Climate Change and Nigeria’s focal point for WASCAL, Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, announced that Nigeria would host the first WASCAL international conference in Abuja this week.
She said the gathering will bring together policymakers, researchers, and development partners from across the West African region.
The event aims to drive investments in renewable energy, foster private–public partnerships, and advance climate resilience programmes.
“The roadshow is aimed at sensitising and creating awareness on climate change and its related issues. We’re all aware of the impact of climate change threatening the existence of mankind and biodiversity,” she said.
But beyond policy declarations, Nigeria must strengthen environmental education, improve adaptation funding, and encourage youth-led innovation to confront the growing crisis.
