The Federal Government has dismissed rumours of a coup plot against President Bola Tinubu, saying it has full confidence in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the administration had no reason to doubt the assurances of loyalty given by the Defence Headquarters, which earlier denied reports linking the detention of 16 officers to a failed coup.
“The Federal Government has no reason to doubt the military on what it has said,” Idris stated.
“We believe the Armed Forces remain committed to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and combating insecurity. The government commends their dedication and will continue to support them in their duty to safeguard the nation.”
The response came after the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, dismissed a report by an online news media – Sahara Reporters, alleging that 16 detained officers were involved in a coup attempt and that the 65th Independence Day parade was cancelled as part of the fallout.
According to Gusau, the story was “fake and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among citizens.”
He explained that the parade’s cancellation was an administrative decision, as President Tinubu had to attend a bilateral meeting abroad while troops were engaged in ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
He clarified that the detained officers were facing a routine disciplinary process unrelated to any political activity.
“The investigation involving the 16 officers is a standard internal procedure to uphold discipline and professionalism. An investigative panel has been constituted, and its findings will be made public,” he said.
Gusau reaffirmed the military’s unwavering loyalty to civilian rule and constitutional order.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain apolitical and totally committed to democracy. We shall continue to support and defend the nation under its elected leadership,” he concluded.
Where do you think these rumours of a coup are originating from? And could this misinformation about military activities indicate growing public anxiety over governance and national stability?
