The political tide in Abia State is already shifting ahead of the 2027 elections. Leaders and stakeholders from the historic Old Bende region have thrown their collective weight behind Governor Alex Otti, endorsing him as their sole governorship candidate.
This was made public during a courtesy visit to Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North/South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.
The powerful delegation, made up of traditional rulers, community leaders, and political figures, passed a unanimous vote of confidence in the Governor, describing his administration as “transformational and people-focused.”
Ikwechegh, who has long been a vocal supporter of Otti, reiterated his earlier declaration that “no son or daughter of Old Bende will run against Governor Otti in 2027.”
That stance has now gained full backing from the union, effectively closing the door on intra-regional rivalry within the bloc, and taking the sail off the tail of Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who has boasted his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will take over the state in 2027.
Mr Kalu is from the Bende bloc.
A Celebration of Unity and Performance
To cement the endorsement, the group announced a grand reception in Otti’s honour, scheduled for Friday, October 31, 2025, at Enyimba Stadium, Aba.
The event, expected to draw thousands, will celebrate what they describe as the Governor’s achievements in infrastructure renewal, public service reforms, and fiscal transparency.
Community leaders said Otti has restored confidence in governance across Abia, transforming Aba into a beacon of modern urban development.
“He has given our people hope again,” said one delegate from Bende, “and we will stand with him all the way to 2027.”
