The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi for their pioneering work on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) — a breakthrough that has transformed modern chemistry and materials science
The trio developed an entirely new type of molecular structure made of metals linked by organic compounds, forming vast porous networks with cavities large enough for other molecules to pass through.
These frameworks have become vital tools in solving global challenges such as clean energy, water scarcity, and pollution control.
Researchers now use MOFs to capture carbon dioxide, purify water, and even harvest moisture from dry desert air.

They are also being applied to store hydrogen and catalyse key chemical reactions, with implications for green energy and climate sustainability.
The Academy described the innovation as “a game-changing leap in molecular architecture,” adding that the laureates’ discoveries have “given chemists new tools to tackle some of the planet’s toughest problems.”
Kitagawa, Robson, and Yaghi’s work continues to influence research in nanotechnology, sustainable materials, and environmental engineering, bridging chemistry and real-world applications in remarkable ways.
