English Premier League: Early Goals Lift United to Crucial Win Over Sunderland

Manchester United claimed a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford in Saturday’s English Premier League match, following a dismal defeat last week to Brentford.

Sunderland burst out aggressively, nearly stunning the hosts when Bertrand Traoré scuffed a golden chance in the third minute. But United hit back swiftly in the eighth minute, Bryan Mbeumo’s pinpoint cross found Mason Mount, who controlled and rifled a low right-footed shot past Robin Roefs.

The Red Devils dominated from there, with Roefs denying Amad Diallo and Mbeumo, then tipping Bruno Fernandes’ curler onto the bar.

The second blow landed at the 31st minute. Diogo Dalot’s long throw created scramble 8n the box, and Nordi Mukiele’s flick-on fell to Benjamin Sesko, who poked home his second goal of the season.

Sunderland rallied late in the half, forcing a penalty call for Sesko’s high boot on Trai Hume only for VAR to overturn it. Stoppage time saw Dan Ballard nod just wide from the corner.

The second half dulled into a cagey affair, with United’s passes astray but Lammens shining: he dove to palm Granit Xhaka’s drive and soared for a high claim amid gusts. Traoré earned a yellow for diving, while sub Brian Brobbey nearly connected with Mukiele’s cross.

Lammens’ one-on-one stop against Chemsdine Talbi sealed the clean sheet, drawing roars from the M16 faithful. Sunderland’s travelling fans, vocal early, fell quiet but clapped their team’s effort off.

We defended well when not at our fluid best, that’s an adult team talking,” United boss Ruben Amorim said. “No real momentum yet, but three points matter.

Sunderland’s Regis Le Bris added: “A good lesson today. When we don’t start right, individually or as a unit, fragility hits hard.”

The win catapults United to 10th with 10 points, easing heat on Amorim after a rocky start. Sunderland drop to seventh on 11, their promotion glow dimmed.

Can the Black Cats regroup fast enough to stay in the top-half hunt?
