The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has worsened. The party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has formally accused Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Illya Damagum, of repeatedly violating the PDP constitution.
Anyanwu made the allegations in a petition dated October 1, 2025, addressed to Damagum. He warned that decisions taken without due process risk being declared illegal and void.
In his words, “It has become imperative to bring to your attention the violation of the provisions of PDP constitution, 2017 as amended, and the constant infraction of the duties of the office of the National Secretary.”
He insisted that Section 36(1)(b) and (e) of the PDP constitution clearly place the powers of issuing meeting notices and implementing resolutions within the office of the National Secretary.
“Regrettably, you have disregarded these provisions without recourse to the legal implications. Any action reached by an illegally constituted NWC is null and void,” he wrote.
He also dismissed the press statement dissolving Akwa Ibom and Cross River executives, saying no valid NWC meeting was convened. “That decision is provocative and grossly unacceptable by me,” he stressed.
Party Leadership Fires Back
But the PDP leadership rejected Anyanwu’s claims. National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the chairman acted within his constitutional powers.
Quoting Section 35 of the PDP constitution, he said, “The national chairman is the chief executive officer of the party. He presides and delegates duties. The national secretary is only the chief administrative officer and cannot act unilaterally.”
Ologunagba also insisted that the November 16–17 national convention was sacrosanct. “The convention train has since left Abuja and will soon be landing in Ibadan,” he declared.
The PDP spokesman accused President Bola Tinubu of failing Nigerians in his Independence Day speech, calling it “boring, uninspiring, and full of propaganda.”
Rebellion in Akwa Ibom
In Uyo, sacked PDP chairman in Akwa Ibom, Mr. Aniekan Akpan, rejected his removal. He vowed to resist what he called “impunity” by the NWC.
Akpan said, “The PDP in Akwa Ibom is intact, right from the state down to the ward level. We will resist any impunity.”
He pointed to Anyanwu’s letter affirming no formal decision to dissolve the state executive council was ever taken.
As factions clash, the once-respected main opposition party is heading to its national convention fractured and increasingly seen as a political paper-tiger as 2027 general election approaches.
