The death toll from a collapsed boarding school in indonesia/">Indonesia’s Java island has climbed to 10, authorities confirmed on Friday.
The tragedy struck on Monday in Sidoarjo town, when part of the multi-storey building suddenly gave way as students gathered for afternoon prayers.
Nanang Sigit, head of the search and rescue office in Surabaya, told reporters: “Today we found five victims, they all were found dead.”
Rescue teams recovered two male students crushed in the school’s ablution area, said Yudhi Bramantyo, operations director of the national rescue agency. A third victim was found nearby, while two more were later recovered from the rubble.
Families Wait in Agony
Officials had earlier said 59 people were still feared missing, leaving distraught families waiting anxiously by the site. Many clutched photos of their children, hoping for a miracle.
Nanang added that the search was delicate. “Vibrations happening in one place can affect other areas,” he explained.
Despite these dangers, families agreed late Thursday for heavy equipment to be deployed. The 72-hour “golden period” for survival had already passed.
Cause Under Investigation
It is suspected that poor construction standards may have contributed to the collapse. Substandard building practices are reportedly common across parts of Indonesia.
The rescue effort suffered another setback when an earthquake shook the region on Tuesday night, forcing workers to halt operations briefly.
At least one crane is now on site, with more expected to speed up the clearance of rubble and recovery of victims.
