Mama Pee Confronts Abure Mid-Flight, Released After Detention

Labour Party’s Julius Abure and social media influencer Precious Oruche (Mama Pee) clashed on Saturday at Abuja airport.

Ms Oruche is well known online as Mama Pee. In a statement, LP’s national spokesperson Obiora Ifoh said Abure was “quietly” in line to board a Max Air flight to Benin when Mama Pee suddenly confronted him.

Ifoh said she kept up the confrontation aboard the flight, ignoring the flight attendants’ pleas to calm down, and carried it on even after the plane landed in Benin, Edo State.

“The attacker, Madam Pee, who is also a known content creator, continued the attack throughout the duration of the flight, defying all attempts by the Max Air flight attendants to calm her. The assault, which attracted a large number of onlookers, continued on disembarkation at the Benin Airport while she kept recording the scene,” he said.

Ifoh added that security operatives at the airport intervened to “whisk Mr Abure to safety,” while Ms Oruche was handed over to police.

Ifoh also warned of a video she released, in which she allegedly “boasted of her connections”.

More Allegations Against Mama Pee

“In one of her films released, the lady claimed that she has contacts with the highest police hierarchy, boasted that nothing will happen to her, and vowed that she will not stop attacking Abure or any member of the Labour Party executive because, according to her, ‘you have killed Labour Party and you are the reason why Obi is no longer in the Labour Party,’” he said.

The LP called the incident “a suicidal aggression” against Abure and said it was politically motivated.

“We sincerely believe that the lady-agent was on an assignment to accomplish the desires of her paymasters. Assault and cyber-bullying are severe crimes under our laws, and we think that the police must fish out her sponsors and cohorts, and bring them to book,” Ifoh said.

He urged party members to stay calm and await the outcome of police investigations.

‘Abure’s thugs injured me’ — Mama Pee

In a video on X, Ms Oruche accused Abure of sending thugs to attack her on arrival at Benin. She said this followed her asking him why he had destroyed the Labour Party.

She claimed Abure and his brother, John Abure, laid siege to her, sent thugs to beat her, and destroyed her iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Edo police proceeded to take her into custody, although Edo police spokesman Moses Yamu initially denied her arrest, prompting fiery lawyer and activist Inibehe Effiong to issue a strongly worded open letter.

Mr Effiong demanded Mama Pee’s immediate release and instead the arrest of Julius Abure. Effiong insisted that Ms Oruche broke no law because she did not assault or physically touch Abure. He alleged the attack on her was premeditated.

The Obidient Movement also condemned the incident, calling it “a barbaric act … an insult to womanhood, a desecration of our democratic values.”

They demanded prompt investigation into those who carried out or sponsored it.

LP internal crisis

The LP has been torn by leadership disputes. Abure leads one faction, while Peter Obi and Mr Otti back the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee setup by the party’s National Executive Committee.

The Court of Appeal later recognised Abure as national chair, but on 4 April the Supreme Court set aside that decision. The court held that leadership issues within a party are internal affairs and not for courts to decide.

Though the Supreme Court said Abure’s faction lacked merit in its cross-appeal, the Abure faction contended that the court did not actually remove him from office, forcing the judgment of the apex court to be subject to public and political interpretations.

Mama Pee (Ms Oruche) has been released from police custody. A video circulated Saturday night showed her free.

Her release appears to have calmed tensions. But the conflict—within LP leadership and the political stakes behind this clash—lingers on.
