The Ogun State government has announced that Value Jet Airline will start passenger operations at the new Gateway International Airport on October 7.
According to a statement by Governor Dapo Abiodun’s aide, Kayode Akinmade, the move followed regulatory approval granted to the state-owned facility.
“According to the flight schedule every Tuesday and Thursday, the airline will operate the GWI-Abuja route, departing GWI at 8:30 am and arriving Abuja at 9:45 am,” Akinmade said.
He added that the return flight will leave Abuja at 4 pm and arrive in Ogun at 5:15 pm.
A Boost for Business and Travel
Akinmade noted that tickets would be available from September 25 online, through travel agents, and at the airport.
He said the route would serve business leaders, bankers, government officials, and leisure travellers eager for faster connections to Abuja and Lagos.
Governor Abiodun described the airport’s certification as historic, saying it was the first time a new airport had secured approval under Nigeria’s current standards.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) praised the airport as a model for future aviation development in Nigeria.
With its 3C Aerodrome code and ARFFS Category 6 rating, the airport has also been designated as an alternate landing site for Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
Abiodun further disclosed that a global logistics firm is planning two weekly cargo flights from London to the new airport.
He said, “With world-class infrastructure, international connectivity, and a strategic location, the Gateway International Airport will raise the bar for air travel in Nigeria.”
