Atiku Camp Accuse APC of Rigging Plans, Sees Dictatorship Coming

Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to rig the 2027 elections.

Ibe made the allegation during an interview on The African Settings Exchange Show on YouTube.

He argued that the APC-led government under President Bola Tinubu is not confident of winning a free election in 2027.

“They are working hard to ensure there is no opposition, whether it’s in the independent media, civil society, or political parties. That is what they are doing,” Ibe said.

According to him, the clampdown on opposition voices is proof that “APC have nothing to offer after two years of retaining mandate. The only way for them to win an election is to begin the process of rigging it, and that process has already started.”

Ibe accused President Tinubu of ruling like a dictator, insisting Nigeria’s democracy is sliding backwards. He said fallen pro-democracy heroes would be horrified by today’s political climate.

“This democracy that we are practicing since 1999 was bought at a very high price to human rights,” he stated.

He recalled sacrifices made by the late MKO Abiola, Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and activists who died during the military years.

“Chief MKO Abiola, Major General Shehu Yar’Adua, Abiola’s wife, lots of children, activists were all killed in that process. We paid a heavy price,” Ibe said.

Ibe’s views are shared by many in the opposition and reflect rising concerns in Nigeria ahead of the next general elections. Some civil society groups have also voiced their opinions regarding what they describe as a shrinking civic space under the Tinubu administration. But supporters of the government debunk these.

Given Nigeria’s electoral history, do you think Ibe’s fears about the early rigging plan hold weight, or is this just political rhetoric as 2027 draws nearer? Share your opinion in the comments section.
