The political battle in Anambra State took a dramatic turn Saturday, with the wife of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, openly challenging Senator Uche Ekwunife to a public oath of fidelity and a DNA verification of their children.
Mrs. Soludo’s challenge followed claims by Ekwunife, the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), that she had ties with former governor Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju.
In a statement on Friday, Mrs. Soludo described the allegation as fabricated and malicious. She warned that unless Ekwunife withdrew her words and apologized within 72 hours, legal action would follow.
“Since Uche Ekwunife claims to be a converted Catholic, I challenge her for both of us to swear an oath of fidelity and chastity at any cathedral in front of the Blessed Sacrament and the Bible,” she declared.
Call for DNA Tests
The governor’s wife also invited the senator to scientific verification. “I challenge you, Uche Ekwunife, for us to subject our children to paternity tests in three reputable hospitals in London. I will pay all the expenses, including travel for you and your family,” she said.
Mrs. Soludo went further, promising that if the results confirmed Ekwunife’s husband as father of her children, she would celebrate with her. “I will not only congratulate you but also present a cash award,” she vowed.
The First Lady, 55, insisted she has lived her life by strict values. “I married him as a virgin and my fidelity to him in 33 years of marriage and for life is ironclad,” she stated.
A Battle of Character
Mrs. Soludo described herself as a quiet, family woman who has never depended on government for survival, even as Anambra’s First Lady.
“My weapons are decency, character, and grace. I am a long-distance runner, and I welcome you to the marathon,” she added, signalling her readiness for a prolonged contest.
The face-off began after Governor Soludo raised questions over Ekwunife’s academic records. The senator fired back with sharp criticisms, and then perhaps wrongfully, pivoted to the First Lady, who had kept a dignified distance from the murky politicking in the state.
Now the debate has shifted from education and healthcare policies to heated personal exchange which profits no resident of the state.
The state is heading for a tight gubernatorial election on November 8, 2025.
