Northern Forum Demands Tinubu Reshuffle Cabinet, Overhaul Security

The Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum (NENF), a coalition of leaders from the 19 northern states, has asked President Bola Tinubu to urgently reshuffle his cabinet and overhaul Nigeria’s fragile security system.

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Convener Dominic Alancha said the Forum had “deeply examined the painful conditions of the people of Northern Nigeria and the nation at large.”

He explained that after wide consultations, they resolved to press for urgent and transformative action.

The group said many current ministers had shown “glaring underperformance.” According to them, the Federal Executive Council as presently constituted lacks both competence and political weight to drive the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“A ministerial appointment is not merely a reward for loyalty; it is a critical assignment. We therefore call on President Tinubu to immediately dissolve and reshuffle the Federal Executive Council, replacing underperforming ministers with individuals of proven integrity, exceptional capability and significant political influence,” the statement read.

The Forum stressed that a stronger cabinet was essential not only for national progress but also for Tinubu’s political survival before the 2027 elections.

Security Declared a Catastrophe

On insecurity, the group lamented that banditry, terrorism and kidnapping had crippled farming, trade and transport across many states. They described the situation as a “full-blown catastrophe.”

NENF declared that the current Service Chiefs had failed despite the huge resources at their disposal and demanded their dismissal. The group urged the President to appoint fresh military leaders with clear mandates and to declare a state of emergency on security in Northern Nigeria.

“This is not a call for militarization but for a targeted, multi-agency emergency operation to flush out terrorists, dismantle their networks, and restore order,” the Forum stressed.

Economic Reforms and Citizen Hardship

The Forum commended Tinubu’s economic reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification. But they urged the government to strengthen interventions that ease hardship on citizens.

They recommended rapid rollout of palliatives, heavy investment in agriculture and manufacturing, and visible upgrades in power, transport and infrastructure.

NENF further called on the President to show empathy and stand with citizens in their daily struggles. They warned of a widening gap between the government and the people.

“We supported the President’s ambition and desire to support him again in 2027, but that support is contingent on effective, empathetic and decisive governance. The time for action is now,” the Forum declared.

Can Tinubu appease the north and regain popular public trust across the country by reshuffling his cabinet to reflect more of the diversity of Nigeria? And what else, if any, has the president left undone to decisively end insecurity?
