Kaduna’s Resident Doctors Resume Indefinite Strike

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Kaduna State chapter, has resumed an indefinite strike starting at midnight on August 31, 2025, due to the state government’s failure to meet welfare demands, including the full implementation of the 2024 Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

The strike, initially declared in June 2025, was suspended after a two-month grace period granted to the government to address the demands, which included 100% CONMESS implementation and payment of two months’ arrears.

The deadline expired on August 31, 2025, with no resolution, prompting the resumption of the strike.

In a statement by ARD President Dr. Richard Daniel and General Secretary Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi, the association said they have become frustrated over the government’s inaction, noting that no adjustments reflecting the agreed terms were observed in the August 2025 salaries.

The ARD at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital also joined the strike, having issued a 12-day ultimatum on August 18, 2025, demanding CONMESS implementation and better welfare to curb brain drain and burnout among doctors.

Formal reminders were sent to the government on June 19, August 1, and August 25, but no progress was made.

The ARD said they are open to dialogue, urging the government to act promptly to avoid disruptions in healthcare delivery.

The association also called for the employment of more resident doctors and better remuneration for state-trained medical students to address manpower shortages.

The strike is expected to strain Kaduna’s healthcare system, with the ARD insisting it will continue until the government fulfils its commitments.
