Liverpool Smash Record to Sign Isak in £125m Deal

liverpool-fc/">Liverpool has sealed a British-record transfer, signing newcastle-fc/">Newcastle striker Alexander Isak for £125 million on Monday.

The Swedish forward agreed to a six-year contract with the Premier League champions after weeks of tense negotiations.

“I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for.”

Isak said he was proud of the move. “I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”

Liverpool had earlier seen a £110 million bid rejected. But Isak’s push to leave Newcastle forced the breakthrough. He even trained alone at Real Sociedad during pre-season.

He was left out of Newcastle’s Asia tour with what the club called a thigh injury. Behind the scenes, Isak accused the management of breaking a promise to let him leave for a top club.

Liverpool’s Big Spending

Isak scored 27 goals in 42 games last season, firing Newcastle into the Champions League and lifting the League Cup. Ironically, that victory came against Liverpool.

Newcastle’s move for Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade on Saturday opened the door for Isak’s switch. The 25-year-old travelled to Merseyside on Monday for his medical, hours before the transfer deadline.

His signing means Liverpool have spent £416 million on players since last season ended. New recruits include Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni.

The spree surpasses Chelsea’s 2023 record of £400 million. It also breaks Liverpool’s own transfer record, set earlier this summer when they paid £100 million for Wirtz.

Eyes on History

Slot now has an attack led by Isak, Wirtz, Ekitike, Salah, Gakpo and Chiesa. Expectations are huge.

If Liverpool defend their title, it will be their 21st league crown — making them the most successful English team. The Reds last won consecutive titles in the 1980s.

But the shift in transfer policy is sharp. Last summer, Chiesa was the only major signing, costing just £10 million.

This time, Liverpool sold Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tyler Morton and Ben Doak, raising £190 million.

The gamble is already paying off. Liverpool top the league with three straight wins, including a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Sunday.
