Szoboszlai’s Stunning Free-Kick Lifts Liverpool Over Arsenal

liverpool-fc/">Liverpool continued their perfect start to the 2025/26 Premier League season with a dramatic 1–0 victory over Arsenal at Anfield.

The match was decided by a single moment of brilliance from Dominik Szoboszlai, whose late free-kick lifted the Reds to the top of the table ahead of the international break.

Arsenal controlled possession in the early stages but failed to create clear chances. Their rhythm was disrupted when William Saliba suffered an injury after a challenge with Hugo Ekitike. Cristhian Mosquera replaced him earlier than manager Mikel Arteta had planned.

Liverpool pressed with intent but struggled to break down Arsenal’s organised defence. Both sides entered halftime without a breakthrough.

⚡ Second Half: Szoboszlai’s Moment of Magic

After the interval, Liverpool began to assert control. Florian Wirtz forced a save from David Raya, and Ekitike followed up with a rebound that was ruled offside.

Arsenal responded by introducing debutant Eberechi Eze, hoping to spark creativity. Noni Madueke showed promise down the wing, but Liverpool’s disciplined midfield and defence held firm.

As the match drifted toward a draw, Szoboszlai stepped up to a free-kick from over 30 yards. He curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner, clipping the post on its way in. Raya could only watch as Anfield erupted.

“It was a moment of magic,” said Liverpool manager Arne Slot after the match.

Arsenal pushed forward in the closing minutes, but Liverpool’s defence stood strong. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté led the back line with authority, while Alisson Becker remained alert to deny half-chances.

Eze added energy, but even his flashes of skill couldn’t unlock Liverpool’s defence. When the final whistle blew, Liverpool celebrated, and Arsenal were left frustrated.

Szoboszlai credited his goal to “long hours of practice on set pieces” and said he felt confident stepping up at the decisive moment.

Arteta praised his team’s effort, saying the match was “decided by brilliance rather than mistakes.”

Looking Ahead

Liverpool now head into the break with momentum and belief. Three wins from three signal a strong start under new manager Arne Slot.

Arsenal remain a formidable side, but Saliba’s injury and their lack of cutting edge will be concerns moving forward.

Both teams face tough fixtures after the break. Liverpool travel to Burnley and prepare for European action against Atlético Madrid. Arsenal host Nottingham Forest before a high-stakes clash with Manchester City.
