Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says Governor Siminalayi Fubara will be reinstated on September 18.
He stated that now the LGA elections were conclusively done “the coast is now clear for lifting the ongoing emergency rule” in Rivers State. Wike spoke shortly after voting at Unit 007, Ward 9, Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor LGA on Saturday, August 30.
The local council polls held across all 319 wards and 23 LGAs suffered from significant voter apathy, especially in urban areas.
Delays in election materials and missing result sheets were reported in multiple locations. Notably, the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was not used at most polling units.
However, Wike described the peaceful conduct of the elections as a benchmark for governance restoration. “People are casting their votes. The process is on smoothly,” he said.
With LGA representatives now in place, he believes both grassroots and state governance will imminently resume,
Voting logistics faced issues in Obio/Akpor, Port Harcourt City, Emohua, and Opobo/Nkoro LGAs due to late material arrival. Some PDP and APC agents reported missing result sheets as polls began.
Despite this, PDP officials like Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu described turnout as civil and hopeful. Observers and candidates noted the polling was more orderly than past elections
