Ghana Gets $100m AI Boost for Farming Transformation from Japan

Ghana is set to become Africa’s first AI-powered agricultural hub after Degas Limited announced a $100 million investment over four years.

The move expands a model that has already financed more than 86,000 smallholder farmers cultivating 122,000 acres nationwide. Degas says the goal is simple: use technology to transform rural livelihoods.

CEO and founder Doga Makiura described Ghana as proof that “when technology meets a clear national vision, smallholder farmers can thrive.”

He made the remark during a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama at the Ghana Presidential Investment Forum.

AI and Satellite Technology in Farming

Makiura explained that the fresh commitment would “scale AI-driven satellite monitoring and precision agriculture techniques so farmers can boost yields, reduce risk, and access fairly priced finance.”

Degas has already recorded major results. “We’ve already seen incomes double with a 95% repayment rate from the farmers,” Makiura revealed.

The company’s platform integrates AI with precision agronomy, offering farmers access to real-time data on crops, weather, and soil health. These insights have drawn strong interest from Japanese investors.

“Many Japanese partners now consider Ghana’s integrated approach the gold standard for agricultural investment in Africa,” the Degas boss added.

Government Backs the Vision

President Mahama welcomed the announcement warmly, describing it as a vote of confidence in Ghana’s transformation agenda.

“This investment reinforces our commitment to integrated agricultural value chains that connect farmers to markets, finance, storage, and processing,” he said.

Mahama stressed that “by leveraging AI and precision technologies, we will improve productivity, enhance food security, and create dignified jobs for youth across rural communities.”

The new funds will also expand farmer financing, crop monitoring, and partnerships in logistics and inputs to strengthen local supply chains.
