The Hisbah Command of the Bauchi State Sharia Commission has rolled out strict new rules to guide social life in the state.
The Commission said the guidelines were introduced to address growing complaints from residents over rising cases of immorality, disorder, and noise at public ceremonies.
In a circular signed by Hisbah’s Permanent Commissioner, Barrister Aminu Balarabe Isah, the Commission issued a detailed list of prohibitions.
The document, titled “Guidelines Governing the Conduct of Marriage Ceremonies and Other Festivals in Bauchi State”, bans the mixing of men and women at social events.
It also forbids dancing between the sexes, especially in the presence of children, and outlaws the sale or consumption of alcohol and intoxicants.
The entry of persons with weapons into venues was also banned. Hisbah insisted that gender-based seating must be enforced at all gatherings.
Ban on Birthdays, DJs and Traditional Festivals
The circular suspended activities during prayer times and directed that traditional dress codes be strictly observed at public occasions.
The Commission prohibited abusive or blasphemous language, and ordered that “women-only gatherings must exclude men, and men-only gatherings must exclude women.”
It further banned popular cultural activities such as Sharo, Shadi, Garaya, Kauyawa Day, as well as DJ entertainment, Gala events, and Aloba shows.
Gambling, prostitution, pornography, and birthday celebrations deemed immoral were also outlawed.
Hisbah warned: “All recreational centers, clubs and cultural organisations must comply with these directives, or risk appropriate sanctions.”
