Commotion in Mexican Senate as Lawmakers Trade Punches

A heated brawl erupted in the Mexican Senate on Wednesday, August 27, leaving the chamber in uproar. The clash involved Senate President Gerardo Fernández Noroña of the ruling Morena party and opposition leader Alejandro “Alito” Moreno of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

The incident unfolded dramatically at the close of proceedings as lawmakers were singing the national anthem. In livestreamed footage, Moreno marched up to Noroña, saying repeatedly: “I’m asking you to let me speak.” He then grabbed the Senate president by the arm.

Noroña’s response was sharp: “Don’t touch me.” In seconds, the chamber turned chaotic. The two men pushed each other violently, and in the scuffle, a photographer was knocked over. Another lawmaker joined the fray, swinging punches as Noroña tried to step back.

The fight stemmed from a tense debate earlier in the session over whether to allow armed forces from other countries in Mexico. After the clash, Noroña told journalists it was the result of a “difficult debate.”

He accused Moreno of assaulting him in the chamber. “(Moreno) started pulling on me, touching me, pushing. He hit me and said, ‘I’m going to beat the shit out of you, I’m going to kill you,’” Noroña alleged.

Noroña announced he would call an emergency session on Friday to address the violence. He plans to propose the expulsion of Moreno and three other PRI lawmakers involved in the fight.

Such a move, if approved, could further deepen political divisions between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party and the opposition bloc ahead of upcoming legislative battles.
