A Kaduna-bound passenger train derailed on Tuesday morning at Asham, along the busy Abuja–Kaduna corridor. The train had departed Abuja at 9:45 a.m. before veering off track.
Nigerian Railways Corporation (NRC) confirmed the train derailment involving its Kaduna-bound AKTS train service at about 11.09 at KM 49 between Kubwa station and Asham station.
Emergency rescue, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals have been reportedly mobilised. Full complement of security already on the ground.
A video of the incident shows several coaches lying off the track. Passengers, including women and children, were seen crawling out in confusion.
There are no reports of casualties or injuries at this time.
Passengers Recall the Moment
In the video clip, one passenger explained that she had been seated in the last coach. When the train stopped abruptly, she stepped out and discovered that the other coaches had overturned, with survivors gathered outside in shock.
This derailment is not the first on the Abuja–Kaduna line, one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger routes. Just days earlier, NRC confirmed a “hot axle” fault near Rigasa Station in Kaduna, which disrupted services for business-class travellers.
In May 2024, another train derailed at Jeremy Station along the same corridor. These repeated incidents have deepened concerns about safety and poor track maintenance.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics 2023 Social Statistics Report, derailments were the most common train accidents between 2020 and 2022. The report recorded 183 derailments within three years, compared with 155 cases of loss of control, 51 detachments, 28 collisions, 9 washouts, and 41 other causes.
Nigeria’s Rail Safety Challenges
Beyond accidents, vandalism has worsened the situation. Stolen rail tracks, signaling equipment, and deliberate sabotage have repeatedly disrupted operations across several corridors.
Other routes have not been spared. On the Warri–Itakpe line, services were suspended after a major fault. NRC announced on August 22, 2025, that urgent repairs were at an advanced stage, with operations set to resume soon.
