The vibrant city of Ile-Ife was buzzing with excitement on Saturday. The Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho, made an important visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.
Igboho was there to apologize sincerely and seek forgiveness from the respected royal leader. The visit attracted many Yoruba traditional rulers, chiefs, and Igboho’s supporters, making it a significant event.
Igboho admitted his past mistakes, including some harsh comments he had made about Ooni. He humbly said, “I thank God for my life and for this day. I never knew Kabiyesi would honor me in this manner.”
He went on to express remorse, “I have offended the Ooni in the past, and I am here to seek his forgiveness. Whoever I may have offended should please forgive me.”
During Igboho’s time in prison in the Benin Republic, he found out that Ooni had been instrumental in his release. Despite Igboho’s earlier criticisms, Oba Ogunwusi played a key role in helping him.
A Call for Support
Igboho asked Ooni to help remove his name from the security watchlist and to assist in unfreezing his bank accounts.
He declared his main focus was the security of Yorubaland and voiced his fears, saying, “My priority remains the security of Yorubaland. Our people are being killed, and we cannot continue like this.”
He urged Oba Ogunwusi, “Kabiyesi, please help us to make this possible.”
Other Yoruba kings, including the Attah of Ayede-Ekiti, Oba Abdulmumini Orisagbemi, and the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Rasheed Olabomi, praised Igboho’s humility. They assured him of their support in resolving his issues.
Ooni encouraged Igboho and his followers to embrace patience and humility as these qualities pave the way to strong leadership. He said, “One thing I have learned is that a patient and humble person will always triumph.”
He also revealed, “I had several private meetings with former President Muhammadu Buhari concerning you, and I thank God you are alive today. It was not easy.”
Unity and Progress
The Ooni appreciated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to Yoruba values. He expressed confidence that Tinubu would back causes important to the Yoruba people.
To Igboho, he expressed fatherly love, “You are my son, and I am not angry with you. You are a pride to the Yoruba race.”
Ooni assured that concerns regarding Igboho’s wanted status and frozen bank accounts would be addressed.
He ended with a call for unity, saying, “Let us put aside fights and unite for the progress of Yorubaland.”
