The corps member, Jennifer Elohor, at the centre of brutality by Anambra State Vigilante, Agunechemba, at her lodge in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, has shared her harrowing experience.
In a viral video on Tuesday, gun-wielding operatives were seen assaulting Elohor, despite her pleas.
The vigilante accused corps members of being internet fraudsters, even after being shown NYSC identity cards.
The assault has drawn condemnation from human rights groups, civil society organisations, and lawmakers, who insist the perpetrators must face justice.
“They Beat Me, Tore My Clothes”
Elohor narrated the incident in an interview with media personality Aprokoking on Wednesday. She said the operatives stormed the three-storey lodge around 5 p.m. on July 13.
“At first, we thought it was our neighbours’ door. But the knock became louder and more aggressive. Before I could reach the door, it was kicked open,” she said.
According to her, a masked man with a gun entered without uniform or identification. “At first, I thought it was an armed robber until he ordered all of us to come outside,” she recalled.
She said the vigilantes ignored their NYSC IDs, ransacked their room, seized their phones and laptops, and pushed them down the staircase.
“They kept asking what gave me the right, as a woman, to challenge them. They beat me, tore my clothes, and hit one of my colleagues with an iron rod,” she said.
Elohor added that she was dragged into their vehicle, slapped repeatedly, and threatened with more violence if she attempted to call for help.
Government Reacts, Promises Justice
Following the public outrage, the Anambra State Government apologised to Elohor and other victims of vigilante abuse.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security and Agunechemba leader, Ken Emeakayi, confirmed that eight operatives had been identified, dismissed, and arrested.
“The administration of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo believes deeply in the rule of law and will never shield any operative who acts unlawfully,” he said.
Emeakayi admitted that though the vigilante was created to support the police, some members had acted outside the law. He called for stronger collaboration with the public.
“We use the occasion to tender an apology to anyone who has suffered abuse. We also call for regular feedback from communities, not only complaints but suggestions to help improve performance,” he added.
He assured that reforms would make the outfit people-centred, with discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights.
