The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that winners of the recent by-elections will receive their Certificates of Return on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
The presentation will take place at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja by 3:00 p.m.
National Commissioner Sam Olumekun said the move aligns with Section 72(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.
Senators-elect from Anambra South and Edo Central will be honoured. Five House of Representatives members-elect will also receive their certificates.
They include winners from Ovie North East and Ovie South West (Edo), Babura/Garki (Jigawa), Chikun/Kajuru (Kaduna), Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North (Ogun), and Ibadan North (Oyo).
“Certificates of Return will be presented to winners of the State Assembly elections by Resident Electoral Commissioners in state offices on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m,” Olumekun added.
The affected constituencies include Ganye (Adamawa), Onitsha North II (Anambra), Basawa and Zana/Kewaye (Kaduna), Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa (Kano), Okura (Kogi), Munya (Niger), and Karim Lamido I (Taraba).
Violence Disrupts Zamfara Polls, Re-run Scheduled
Olumekun confirmed that re-run elections were conducted in Enugu and Kano after earlier disruptions.
Ngene Bright Emeka of Labour Party won in Enugu South 1, while Ya’u Garba Gwarmai of APC clinched victory in Ghan/Tsanyawa, Kano.
However, the Kaura Namoda South Constituency election in Zamfara was declared inconclusive due to violence in five polling units.
“Election was held in Kaura Namoda South despite the security situation. But the Returning Officer couldn’t declare a winner due to violence/emergency in five polling units,” Olumekun said.
A total of 3,572 voters were registered in the affected areas, with 3,265 PVCs collected. The margin of lead stood at 1,662.
“Based on Section 24(3) and (4) of the Electoral Act 2022, election must be held in the affected polling units to determine a winner,” he stated.
INEC has fixed Thursday, August 21, 2025, for the supplementary election in those five polling units.
