Nigeria’s waters have remained free of piracy for five straight years. That’s the proud record the Nigerian Navy shared on Saturday in Akwa Ibom.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, made this known during the passing out parade of the 2025 batch of Young Sailors at the Nigerian Navy School, Ikot Ntuen.
He spoke through Rear Admiral Gabriel Aligwe, Chief of Administration at the school. The message was clear: the Navy’s efforts are paying off.
Rear Admiral Aligwe explained that the Navy’s presence on the waterways is strong and consistent.
“We have Operation Delta Sanity and a series of patrols,” he said. “We have surveillance systems and NNS ships at sea to keep us safe.”
He added, “Don’t forget that for about five years now Nigeria has recorded zero cases of piracy. That tells you the amount of efforts put in by our men who constantly patrol the waterways.”
The Gulf of Guinea, once a hotspot for maritime crime, has seen major improvements. International bodies like the International Maritime Bureau have also acknowledged Nigeria’s progress.
Young Sailors Urged to Stay Focused
The parade wasn’t just about statistics. It was a celebration of discipline, courage, and dreams.
Rear Admiral Aligwe encouraged the graduating sailors to stay resilient. “My advice to them is to continue to pursue their dreams and remain resilient,” he said.
“A lot of them are going to be absorbed into the military; some will go to the Nigerian Defence Academy, while some will remain as personnel in the Nigerian Navy.”
He described their training as a solid foundation for a fulfilling career.
Governor’s Message: Shun Vices, Embrace Purpose
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, also sent his goodwill. Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh, he praised the young sailors for their achievements.
“With the quality of features we have in this school, I have no doubt that you have been well groomed,” he said.
“I therefore charge you to remain focused and determined in your educational pursuit. You are advised to shun all vices, as these will attract negative and serious consequences.”
The governor’s words echoed the Navy’s call for discipline and purpose.
