The Imo State Government has banned graduation parties for nursery and junior secondary school students across public and private schools.
The directive came in a memo dated August 15, 2025, signed by the Commissioner for Education, Professor Bernard Ikegwuoha.
The policy takes effect immediately and targets what the government calls “unnecessary distractions” in the education system.
According to the memo, only Primary 6 pupils and Senior Secondary School 3 students are allowed to hold graduation ceremonies.
“Graduation ceremonies and parties for Kindergarten, Nursery and Junior Secondary School 3 students are hereby abolished,” the Commissioner stated.
He said the policy is to align with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system and aims to refocus attention on academic milestones.
“This policy aims to ensure that students, parents, guardians and stakeholders focus on academic achievements,” he added.
The Ministry says it is committed to delivering “quality and functional education to all students in the state.”
Textbook Changes Now Limited to Every Four Years
The memo also addressed the frequent change of textbooks, which has become a financial burden for many families.
Professor Ikegwuoha directed schools to stop introducing new textbooks every year.
“These textbooks are designed to be used for a period of four years,” he said.
“Children should be able to use the textbooks of their siblings for four consecutive years.”
He warned school proprietors, especially in private and faith-based institutions, to stick to the approved textbook list.
“Frequent change of textbooks undermines the quality of education and burdens parents,” the memo read.
