The Edo State Police Command has busted a criminal gang involving a serving police officer and three civilians.
The group was accused of abducting, robbing, and intimidating innocent citizens in Benin City.
Their arrest followed a viral video posted by a victim who narrated his ordeal with tears in his eyes and his wife beside him.
The man said he boarded a commercial vehicle around 8 p.m. after work when he was stopped by armed officers near Adesuwa Junction.
“They asked me who was in my profile picture. I told them it was my wife. They asked if she was American, and I said yes. Immediately, they handcuffed me. My hand is still numb till now,” he said.
He alleged that the officers took his phone and belongings, then brutalised and extorted him.
The video triggered swift action from the Edo Police Command.
Police Inspector and Accomplices Nabbed
CSP Moses Yamu, the Command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrest in a statement dated August 17, 2025.
“Acting on this complaint and other related reports, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, directed that the perpetrators be identified and arrested without delay,” he said.
On August 15, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team intercepted the suspects with a silver Toyota Yaris and incriminating items.
Inspector Ojo Oloruntobi was arrested alongside Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho.
“They had been collaborating to terrorise residents through extortion and harassment,” the statement read.
Command Vows to Clean House
The Edo Police Command condemned the act and promised justice.
“The arrested officer and his collaborators will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement said.
CP Agbonika warned that “there will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the Force.”
He added that any officer caught in misconduct would be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted.
The Command urged the public, especially the victim, to assist investigators with credible information.
“We remain unwavering in our duty to protect lives and property, restore public trust, and uphold the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement concluded.
