Senate President Godswill Akpabio landed in Abuja at dawn on Monday, ending days of speculation about his health.
He arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by 4:00 a.m., stepping off the plane into the arms of waiting senators, aides, and loyal supporters.
The reception at the Presidential Wing was warm. Some described it as a quiet but firm show of political strength.
Akpabio had travelled to London after leading Nigeria’s delegation to the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, held from July 29 to 31.
His absence stirred whispers. Some claimed he was hospitalised. Others questioned his capacity to lead the Senate.
Back from Geneva, Ready for Work
Speaking to journalists, Akpabio dismissed the rumours. He looked hearty, dressed in a flowing white kaftan, and smiled often.
He said the National Assembly would resume with energy. “We are coming back with robust legislative engagements,” he promised.
He also defended the size of Nigeria’s delegation to Geneva. “It was necessary for strengthening democratic governance and reinforcing ties with other arms of government,” he said.
The Geneva conference brought together parliamentary leaders from over 100 countries. Discussions focused on global peace, climate action, and inclusive development.
Nigeria’s delegation included lawmakers, parliamentary staff, and foreign affairs officials.
Political Signals and Public Perception
Akpabio’s return should calm nerves within the ruling party, where his absence had created space for concern and speculation among opposition voices.
Some analysts say the early morning arrival was deliberate. It sent a message: he’s back, he’s fit, and he’s in charge.
The Senate President is expected to meet with key committee heads this week. Talks will centre on budget reviews, constitutional amendments, and oversight plans.
