Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their Premier League season in style, cruising past newly promoted Burnley with a 3–0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It was a dream start for new manager Thomas Frank, who took charge after Ange Postecoglou’s departure in June.
The victory came just days after Spurs lost the UEFA Super Cup to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. But against Burnley, they looked sharp, focused, and ready to move forward.
Richarlison stole the spotlight with two brilliant goals. He opened the scoring in the 10th minute, volleying home a cross from Mohammed Kudus. “It was a perfect ball,” Richarlison said. “I just had to finish.”
His second came in the 60th minute—a stunning scissor-kick that had fans on their feet. Kudus, making his Premier League debut after a £45 million move from West Ham, assisted both goals. “Kudus showed his quality from the first minute,” Frank said.
Brennan Johnson added the third in the 66th minute, calmly slotting past Martin Dúbravka after a quick counterattack. Richarlison started the move with a clever regain in midfield.
The Brazilian now has 18 Premier League goals for Spurs in 71 appearances. His brace against Burnley was his first since last October.
Burnley Falter Under Pressure, Spurs Dominate Stats
Burnley, managed by former Spurs midfielder Scott Parker, matched Tottenham in shot volume but lacked precision. They were also caught out by the new eight-second rule for goalkeepers. Dúbravka was penalized early, gifting Spurs a corner.
Tottenham controlled the game with 68% possession and 88% pass accuracy. Their expected goals (xG) stood at 2.33 compared to Burnley’s 1.10. Kudus created five chances and completed two dribbles, earning a standing ovation when substituted late on.

Frank praised the team’s effort but remained grounded. “It was solid, not flawless,” he said. “Richarlison’s work rate and Kudus’ creativity made the difference.”
The win marks Spurs’ fifth consecutive opening-day home victory. It also extends their unbeaten run in August Premier League matches to 14 games.
